Choosing a college major is hard. Many people don’t know in high school what career they want to pursue. Others have three or four ideas and need help charting a course. Still others think they know and then change their minds.

Add to all of this the tremendous pace of technological and societal change and various predictions about how many times you may change careers and the search process can be daunting.

Don’t let a bevy of choices keep you from finding (or crafting) the future you want! You do not have to have all the answers your first day of school. And, even more important, you can prepare for change and uncertainty.

A liberal arts based curriculum is about much more than learning a specific subject or skill or preparing for a desired career. It’s also about being a well-rounded person with an ability to think critically, understand context and information, and communicate effectively.

Such skills will aid you in any career that you choose – from arts and humanities, to the sciences, health care careers and beyond.

At Daemen, all students complete these types of “core” courses no matter their major. Students also gain real-life experience through immersive service learning, study abroad, research projects and more.

One of the best ways to prepare for a changing future is to pair majors, minors and other specializations and coursework around your interests. For example, you may wish to major in business or healthcare and minor in Spanish or entrepreneurship. Make sure the schools you are looking at are flexible enough to let you customize your educational experience.

Daemen University offers more than 65 academic majors and programs and more than 45 minors. These offerings are updated regularly based on market conditions and student interests. For example, just a month ago we added two new Business specializations – Social Entrepreneurship, and Operations and Supply Chain Management.

If cutting edge programs are important to you, ask the colleges you are looking at about their newest offerings – what are they? How frequently are new offerings added?

You may not know. And that’s okay. College is about learning, growing and discovering what’s right for you. Ask your admissions counselors what the process for undeclared students looks like. How will you select courses? Are there specific courses to introduce you to different types of work and majors? What sort of coaching is available to help you make the decision?

College should always be a partnership between students and the faculty and administrators devoted to their success, but this is even more important if you aren’t sure what path is right for you.
