If you’re beginning the college search process, one of the most important events to attend is an open house. This allows you to see first-hand if the school is the right fit for you—and to get in touch with people on campus.
From financial aid to meal plans and campus housing, college open houses showcase an institution’s offerings to give you an idea of what it would be like to be a student.
To learn more about what happens at a college open house and the top reasons to attend, we spoke with Yolanda Morris, director of admissions events and special programs at Daemen University near Buffalo, New York.
Just FYI—Daemen University will host its summer open house on Saturday, Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Come see if you can picture yourself here,” said Morris. “We’d love to have you—and help you gain a sense of belonging here.”

No. 1 – Meet faculty and students
Hearing from faculty, staff and students, face-to-face, is invaluable. The unique experience gives prospective students insight into what their life as a student would be like at the institution.
At Daemen’s open house, prospective students can meet with professors from their specific major of interest.
“This helps them gain further insight into what they can expect from being in a particular program,” Morris explained. “Or what it may be like to double-major or minor in a subject area.”
Current Daemen students are always on hand to share their insights on what it’s like to study at the school.
Daemen’s open house also provides the opportunity for students to learn about meal plans and specialization options where they can work directly with the catering manager on their meals if they have dietary needs.
No. 2 – Visit campus + gain a sense of belonging
Campus tours are an essential part of an open house at Daemen. Students and their families gain a glimpse of what life on campus is like.
“They no longer have to picture what housing will look like because they can see it for themselves,” said Morris.
Prospective students will be shown residence halls, dining areas, classrooms, and the many amenities and services to explore and learn about.
Campus tours also allow students to see communal gathering places and recreation areas.
No. 3 – Learn about the college admissions process
Attendees of an open house learn about the general education curriculum at Daemen, financial aid options—and can start the conversation about transitioning to college.
Daemen admissions representatives are on-hand to guide prospective students along the way through the entire college application process.
“Everybody walks away from an open house with a better understanding of the overall process,” said Morris. “And they’re one step closer to finding where is right for them.”
