NYC Native Jevon Jordan Tells All
As a student coming from New York City to Buffalo, there are a lot of unique opportunities waiting for you here. While The Big Apple has so much life, history, culture, and massive amounts of people, students like Jevon Jordan have been able to experience something special right here in Western New York as well. It’s an at-home feeling here at Daemen, plus the opportunity to make a college experience truly your own.
In the words of Jevon Jordan
The best way for us to express all that Daemen and Western New York have to offer, is hearing from our students themselves. Now a senior, Jordan has experienced so much on campus with his education, activities, and friendships here, all important things that help make this place a second home to him and all those around. We asked him to tell us a bit about his experience.
Jordan learned about Daemen while a young junior at High School for Sports Management in Brooklyn, attending the annual East Coast Conference College Fair. The event and the help of his school counselor, who was a crucial part of his college search process, led him straight to Daemen University. By taking a leap and going away to college, Jordan achieved his goals of independence and building a strong network surrounding him. He’s also had the chance to get to know all that Buffalo and Western New York has to offer, including its unique bi-national region, awesome professional sports, arts, music, and cultural institutions.
Why Daemen?
By traveling across the state for college, many doors have opened for Jordan. He appreciated the ways that his admissions counselor, David Johnson, worked with him to learn all he needed to know about Daemen and its affordability to provide him the education and unique learning opportunities he was looking for. Jordan humbly said he came here as a “regular kid and transformed into a bursting light.” We have to agree as his creativity and leadership skills have made him a standout student!
Opportunities at Daemen
“Every opportunity I’ve seen success in thus far at Daemen stems from me taking that leap, and stepping out of my shell,” said Jordan. This is definitely true as Jordan’s success is much more than just academic. As the founder and creator of Wildcat Media & Entertainment, Jordan built this student-led media presence to impact all of those on campus. It’s an incredible student-driven platform where they can creatively express their artistic views, celebrate diversity and inclusion, and teach the use of multimedia technologies. A social atmosphere and culture unlike any other, it’s a place and space for students to create their own music and video content, telling the story of their lives and the Daemen University experience.
Jordan also had a hand in creating a music group at Daemen, Underrated Evolution. The birth of the group of aspiring music artists speaks to young creators who never give up on their vision, and execute in order to make it happen. As group member and founder Jordan stated, “Everyday is a mission to become a better you, constantly evolving!” The label was initiated through a strong passion for music, naturally gathering together burgeoning music artists and their musical mission speaks to empower and give a platform to young aspiring music artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs on the rise.
Jordan also became a resident assistant; forming a conduit to branch campus activities and the reslife division to create better programming. Many memories have been made at Daemen, and one of his favorites being able to participate in the first ever Wildcat Weekend basketball tournament where he even had the chance to interview Jay Sean!
Final Words of Advice
“College is what you make it! Don’t expect college to be an experience if you don’t put in the effort to make the best out of it. In my experience, Daemen has allowed me to fully create, and bring my own sense of culture to the school, in essence leaving behind a legacy. At other schools, you get thrown into the norm. There, you build on their legacy instead of creating your own. … Choosing Daemen meant that I know I’m leaving behind a tremendous legacy (with Wildcat Media & Entertainment), and people will carry it on and make their own mark.
